Calvin Butler, CEO One Head Grooming has always had a passion for cutting hair. He started gaining experience grooming friends and family in the ninth grade, then years later transitioned to barber school.

Butler’s drive for excellence sets him aside from competition. What he offers is more than just a style, it’s an experience.  He wants everyone that ventures into his shop to feel at home, like their presence matters and their voices are heard.

Butler feels like one thing the world could use more of is empathy and compassion, two qualities that are intricately woven into the fabric that is One Head Grooming.

What motivated you to start your business? Is there someone in particular who inspired you?

My family encouraged me since I was a kid.  Growing up, I watched my whole family do hair.  My sister would have her friends come over after school and treat the living room like a salon.  My parents were the go to people for the infamous Jheri curl.  I have to credit my uncle because he owned a shop and allowed me to shadow him as he worked and conducted business.

What training/experiences did you have prior to starting this business that made you successful?

I gained hands-on experience early on by cutting my friends’ hair, but my work ethic was definitely due to my faith.  Church really taught me how to do everything with a spirit of excellence, something that has stuck with me till this day.  Everything I do, I do with excellence and I think it glorifies God when we exalt him and do things that please him.

Tell me about a time you faced a serious problem or hardship during your business

Learning how to engage with people from different walks of life was one of my hardest challenges.  Everyone was not raised in the manor I was or believe the things I do. This has challenged me and expanded my growth. Today,  I can converse with anyone on any given topic.

Many Black owned businesses had to shut down during COVID. How did you stay alive during the pandemic and how are you keeping the doors open?

Quarantine was scary but it was also eye-opening.  My faith was tested in many ways.  I had clients who have moved on, shaved off their hair so they didn’t need a barber anymore. It was overwhelming.  As horrible as it was, I couldn’t help but be thankful because my spouse maintained a steady income the whole way.  She held it down and we are fine financially.

What’s next for your business? What does the future hold for you and your company?

I’m excited to be launching One Head Grooming as a store front at a new location. I’ll be able to serve the community while creating employment, all by creating an atmosphere and experience that I’ve always dreamed of.  I am beyond grateful for the part B3 Elevation played in helping me get to the next level.
